“This volume is centered around the mostly middle class employees of the Viennese court in the times of Emperor Karl VI (Charles VI) and Maria Theresia. Between 1711 and 1765 the princely court employed about 4.000 men and women at numerous offices. This makes the Viennese Court one of the largest and most stable employers.
The authors systematically studied career paths of various men and women at court – mostly based on the Hofkalender and the Hofparteienprotokolle – and analyzed them in view of various social-historical issues. This volume gives insight into the beginning of court service, promotions and advancements but also pension plans for court officers, their widows and orphans.”
